Kevin Brennan Writes About What It's Like

Learn why Richard Ford puts manuscript pages in the freezer

There are some nice tidbits in this little snippet of an interview. It’s nice to see a serious writer with such an easy manner. He doesn’t seem tortured or pretentious or narcissistic, and he’s been married to his wife since 1968 (take that, Norman Mailer!)

He loves the language, and his feel for it, he says (via Wiki) is “a source of pleasure in itself β€” all of its corporeal qualities, its syncopations, moods, sounds, the way things look on the page.”

I read Canada last year. I’m glad he saved its early fragments for twenty years in the freezer…

I have a manuscript holding the laundry room door open. Maybe I ought to throw it in the freezer. One never knows

If you do, don’t mistake it for a frozen lasagna…

Given the quality of the writing the confusion may be between it and four day old fish.

That’s one way to preserve a manuscript, though I’d fear the power would go out and I’d forget and all the ink would wash away.

Freezer bag, man. The miracle of Ziploc.

Yeah, that would be the *exact* thought running through my head while I stared at the puddle of ink.

I love his “I’m just a slow thinker, I’m a slow reader, I do everything pretty slowly.” That’s me all over πŸ™‚

Yeah, I liked that part too. Flies in the face of the idea that you have to saturate the market with books to build your readership. (I’d rather write a few great books.)

And you do have a few great books already πŸ™‚
