Kevin Brennan Writes About What It's Like

Let me slip you a Mickey

Looks like fun. Turns out they used to have a lot of fun back then.

I put this up because I just bought a guitar method book by Mickey Baker, who was all over rock, R&B, blues, and pop in the ’50s and ’60s. His book is a classic, and it’s been in print for more than 50 years. Even has the same cover!

51htO28iIlLI particularly like the production of this song, which has a great stereo thing going, with Mickey’s guitar double-tracked but different enough in each channel to cause some interesting weaving. There also seems to be some delay, so for 1959 this has quite an interesting sound.

Most of all, though, I just love the cool dancing! And the fact that Mickey’s birth name was MacHouston Baker. How awesome is that?

Look for more Mickey Baker on YouTube, including the classic “Love Is Strange” by Mickey and Sylvia.
