Kevin Brennan Writes About What It's Like

How many players in the Rahsaan Roland Kirk saxophone trio?

Just the one, really. Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Marvel as he blows three saxes simultaneously to striking sonic effect. Gape at his gaping embouchure. Listen to the haunting groove.

I hadn’t heard of Kirk until one of my favorite YouTube performers did a fine version of Kirk’s “We Free Kings” recently. Now I’m on a hunt for anything I can find from the man, who had a great, but terribly short, career as a leader and as a sideman for giants like Mingus, Roy Haynes, and Quincy Jones.

If you don’t care for the little bell-like intro, you can skip ahead to the 1:30 mark or so to watch him doing the sax threesome. Pretty remarkable.
