WHAT THE HELL

Kevin Brennan Writes About What It's Like

Happy Birthday, Reading Recommendations! (And a giveaway too…)

ReadingRec

It’s hard to believe that the inimitable Susan Toy started her blog, Reading Recommendations, two years ago. I came to the indie scene right around that time, but it wasn’t till a bit later, when I was searching for ways to promote Yesterday Road, that I stumbled on it and said, What a terrific idea!

Here’s what Reading Recommendation’s About page has to say vis-à-vis its mission:

This blog is intended to promote authors and their published work – both traditionally and self-published, in print and eBooks. In exchange for this FREE listing, I request all authors reciprocate by promoting Reading Recommendations, their fellow authors listed on the site, and me and my work, as much as possible.

It doesn’t get much simpler than that.

What I like most about it is the fact that Susan presents her offer as a reciprocal deal. I’ve written about the concept of “reciprocal altruism” before and how, when all parties are playing nice, it works like a dream. The problem is that some parties like to reap the benefits of it without paying it forward, so what Susan has created is a structured, organized form of reciprocal altruism.

In other words, she’s paying attention.

Part of the blog is called “All-Star Authors On Reading Recommendations,” and I’m honored to be among the nineteen names there. (Not sure I deserve it, either, compared to some of the other writers!) It has nothing to do with fame. From Susan’s point of view, all-stellarness revolves around a desire to help other authors, to promote them when it won’t help you in the least, to be generous with time and enthusiasm. Check out the nineteen all-stars. You’ll see a lot of familiar names there, if you’ve been hanging around this scene even a little while.

But beyond these names, Susan has promoted more than 250 others, and always in the same simple format asking what the writer’s latest book is, what she’s working on now, and what books she recommends. There’s room for a brief bio and a description of the book. And links, to boot.

Here’s a little icing for the RR birthday cake. Comment in this post to be included in a drawing for a free ebook by yours truly. I’m giving away one copy each of Yesterday Road, Occasional Soulmates, and Town Father. And if you’ve already read my stuff, comment on Susan’s birthday post for a chance at a book by one of her other talented writers.

So, to celebrate Reading Recommendations’ second birthday, fly over to the site today and discover some new writers. And if you’re an author, get to know Susan Toy. She’ll do more for you and your books than anyone you meet on the interwebs, and she’ll make you feel like the toast of the town while she’s at it.

You can also join in the fun at the Facebook event and on Twitter via #RR2ndAnniversary.

Thank you, Susan!

Oh, PS. Susan lives half the year on the Caribbean island of Bequia, which happens to be the setting of her thriller, Island In The Clouds. Pick it up here and get a taste of island life, with a little murder on the side.

Thank, Kevin, for your kind words, and for being a major part of this crazy thing for most of these two years!

Lovely notion, the reciprocal altruism, though it does stick there a bit like peanut butter on the mouth — in a very real sense, I get that encouragement from you Kevin, as a working writer, by way of reading and commenting on my blog posts, amid the chatter of robots pressing buttons, checking charts and statistics. Thanks for being real and sharing this great-sounding resource with us! – Bill
