Kevin Brennan Writes About What It's Like

Naming rights

I spotted this beauty on Twitter a few days back and had to share it with you. As the tweet says, it’s a list of American-sounding names created by a Japanese video game designer for a computer baseball game. Don’t you wish there were a team made up of these dazzling names? Don’t you wish that team was in the playoffs right now?

I love the way people hear other languages in their heads. We get the broad strokes but not the nuances, and it’s hard to know when one word ends and another begins, since we don’t know any of the words. We get rhythm and pitch, though, so it’s easy to make fun of other languages by mimicking those. You remember this girl, I bet:

I don’t think I’d want to tackle a Japanese baseball team’s lineup, especially not in Japanese lettering. This guy actually did pretty well, when you think about it.

And I have to think that somewhere out there is real man name of Bobson Dugnutt.

That’s the first time I’ve seen one of Sara’s videos. I can’t believe she’s NOT speaking different languages. She’s very convincing. What a unique talent.

She’s amazing. I don’t know if it comes naturally to her or if she does all kinds of research and practice, but the end result is terrific.

That’s a real Dandleton of a list. Love it. I remember seeing that video before as well. Fun to listen to. Imagine what our pets must be thinking.

Ha, yeah, we’re constantly making gibberish noises at them, yet the food keeps showing up, so. 🐶😺

Enjoyed the names. I can see a bunch of programmers late at night after a few Kirin beers laughing their asses off as each name comes to life.

bobson dugnutt is my favorite. i would have liked to see harry caray misspronounce these names so that way they would make sense. Like Willie Dustice would become Willie Justice jeromy gride would become jeromy pride onson sweemey would be Anson Sweeney sleve mcdichael would be steve mcmichael

Bobson rocks, for sure. I’d like to hear Will Ferrell as Harry Caray mispronouncing those names!
