The Disappointed Housewife is approaching!
I’ve received a number of fun pieces the last few weeks, and though I’m still keeping the pre-launch submission window open, the big day will be January 15. Mark your calendars.
I hope all my readers here at What The Hell will quickly follow the new lit mag and start spreading the word. But I’m also eager to see new submissions coming in so I can build up a nice catalog of material for readers. I’ll be posting open submission calls at a variety of places, hoping to find a lot of writers willing to try new things. Of course, I’ll always give readers of this blog a fair shot at publication because loyalty deserves reward. If you have something you think would fit in at TDH, send it on over. Or read the pieces that I’ve already assembled to get a feel for what I’m looking for, then submit your best offbeat stuff.
Categories include (but might not be limited to):
◦ Fiction ~ Short stories under 1500 words are ideal, but I’ll also consider novel excerpts of that length. Flash fiction is welcome.
◦ Poetry ~ I’m really looking for meta here, rather than traditional verse. Think in terms of work that plays with the conventions of traditional poetry. Try my new form, pentagraphs. Make up a new form. Mess with older works in the public domain. Find poetry buried in older prose in the public domain.
◦ Essays ~ The subjects will be the stretch here, since it’s hard to make a cohesive argument in anything but well-written prose. How you treat the subject will matter a lot. So far I’ve accepted one essay about giving up social media and one about the problem of time travel. Humor is a great approach.
◦ Faux forms & genres ~ There’s a lot of room for experimentation in this category, but it can include anything from parodies to pieces that defy categorization. I have in mind odd restaurant menus, product instruction manuals, résumés, book reviews, movie synopses, ransom notes – almost anything that engrosses and delights the reader.
And finally, I’ll consider multimedia projects that include writing in some way. Videos, sound clips, stories in photos, tag clouds, collages. Any of the above categories can include media components as well.
Send your submissions to thedisappointedhousewife(at)gmail(dot)com.

‘Preciate, Charles! Hope you’re staying warm up there in the frigid East! ❄️💨
Thanks. What’s this ‘warm’ that you speak of?
Heh heh. 😉
Should have said ‘you’re welcome’. Sorry about that.
I like that you’re inviting experimentation, and eager for the launch!
Thanks, Bill, and I hope you send something in! As JJ would say, “Pomes pennyeach.”

Author, Kevin Brennan, has created a new opportunity for getting your short(ish) pieces of writing out there into the world! Check out the new online publication, The Disappointed Housewife, and consider submitting something … Note: submitting “pieces that defy categorization” is encouraged!!
Gracias, Susan! Maybe I’ll even have to create a category: Uncategorizable. 😉
That would be cool … and unique!
Awesome! I’ve shared the news on both Twitter and my local writer’s group Facebook page.
Thanks a lot, Phillip! I hope some of your group members have something to submit.

Looking for a place to get published? This new literary magazine, the Disappointed Housewife may be just for you. It’s looking for submissions in a variety of categories.
Have reblogged it on e-Quipsblog. Looks very good. Socks are evil and usually migrate from pairs to solitude. I read a not-yet published children’s books that blamed it on a one footed monster who lived under the bed and reported on all of the idiosyncracies of a boy who loved his massive collection of special purpose socks and his unicorn obsessed mother.
You just blew my mind. 😉
Thanks for the reblog!
Sorry about that. 🙂
The Disappointed Housewife. Great title.
Glad you like it, Carol! I hope it comes to be seen as ironic. 😉
