WHAT THE HELL

Kevin Brennan Writes About What It's Like

4/26/13

That’s the day I started What The Hell. Five years ago today.

Long-time readers might remember that I started the blog as a way of dipping my toe into the mysterious waters of self-publishing. I had just stumbled onto Smashwords and Amazon KDP, and you know what I said? I said, “What the hell. Try it.” And I put myself on a five-year plan.

Here’s what I’ve done since 4/26/13:

2013: Our Children Are Not Our Children

2013: Yesterday Road

2014: Occasional Soulmates

2015: Town Father

2016: Fascination

2017: In No Particular Order

I’ve also written over 1500 blog posts, probably half a million words or better. A lot of them were goofy, but I like to share my goofy shit if only to show another side. That’s right: I’m not just the darkly profound author of Parts Unknown.

I’ve written twenty-one original songs.  At least twenty-two “Haiku for the Hell of It’s.” Plenty of humorous verse. A long piece on the state of fiction in this boilerplate culture of ours. And I gave you this to think about.

After all that, it’s time for a hiatus as I figure out what happens next. Meanwhile, please follow, support, and submit your offbeat poems, stories, and essays to The Disappointed Housewife.

You can always reach me at kevinbrennan520(at)gmail(dot)com if you feel like chatting. And if you’re a writer seeking editorial help, don’t forget I’m always around for that too.

My five-year plan is complete. As they say in Italy on momentous occasions like this, Il mio aliscafo è pieno di anguille.

Congratulation Kevin. As you know, I have other pots on the stove myself. I haven’t abandoned the blog, yet, and like to stay in touch. Until we meet again! Cheers!

Five years, quite an accomplishment, congrats! Enjoy your hiatus as you “figure out what happens next.” (I’m sure it’ll be great whatever it is.)

Thanks, Priscilla, and thanks for reading. One thing I’ve learned is you never know what’s around the next bend in the road … 😉

Seems like quite a bit to be proud of, and wow, I can’t believe it’s been five years…I can say that you’re an inspiration to those of us still trying to make it to basecamp! Looking forward to what’s in store for you next. Enjoy the break and running things at TDH.

Thanks, Phillip. I recall that your sabbatical seemed to do great things for your head. Hoping for same here. 😉

Sounds like a well deserved break Kevin and it’s good to take stock on these milestone occasions. I have enjoyed your posts-musical, goofy and otherwise. Regards and best wishes.

WTH has been one of my favourite blogs since I discovered it, can’t remember when, exactly. I hope you’ll be back post-hiatus.

Aw, thanks Audrey! I’ve enjoyed our connection too, and of course I’ll be keeping an eye on your blog and your writing. And your garden. 😉

Breaks are always good. Of course, it’s better if you can plan them, rather than just let them happen (as I seem to be doing). Every weekend I tell myself I’ll write a blog post … and then I don’t. It’s not like I don’t have things to say. Just transferring them from my head to my hands to the keyboard seems like a long road sometimes.

Please do pop in now and then since your blog is one of my favorites. Continue your great work with TDH. And I know I can catch up with you through email 🙂

Thanks, Marie, and we can email chat anytime you have a spare minute. You’ve been with WTH since the beginning!

I think my main goal will be to change my expectations about blogging/publishing/promoting so I don’t keep bashing my head against the wall when things don’t pan out. Could be a tall order … 😐
