Kevin Brennan Writes About What It's Like

You’d best keep that blade sharp, son

I remember hearing Dave Grohl talk about songwriting once, and he said all you have to do is come up with a bumpersticker phrase and the song will basically write itself.

That’s the way this number came about. Use it or lose it. Howcome nobody’s ever made a hit out of that phrase?

I had fun with this one, partly because I got to use three of my four guitars: an Ibanez acoustic, a Fender Stratocaster on the lead solo, and an Epiphone Les Paul on secondary rhythm tracks. My wife always appreciates when I use multiple guitars because it seems like they’re all essential and not just toys I’ve collected. I also enjoyed teasing the listener with sexual double entendres, but that’s really in the mind of the beholder, isn’t it …

As usual, I’m no singer, but the song has words so I sung ’em!

Sounds good, your singing including! Catchy and sharp sounding I think. Funny photo isn’t it? Re: that bumpersticker comment from Dave Grohl, I’ve been entranced by a Tom Waits line this week, “I’m going to whittle you into kindlin’”

Hey, thanks Bill! I’m really glad you liked it. I can’t remember where I found that pic, but it freaks me out every time!

This just popped into my head: “Tom Waits for no man.”

        I know, Tom doesn’t wait.

This may be the first time I’ve heard “utilized” in a song. Kudos.

Thanks, Gary! The syllables were right. You should hear the song where I use “ergo” …

      Thanks for listening!

I liked it too! And I totally understand why Sue would appreciate you using all your guitars 😉 Every so often I have to ask Greg, so what do you use this camera for???? In fact, one reason why I’m so focused (pun) on iPhone photography is because none of his cameras, including the CanonT3i that I bought ten years ago, is ever conveniently available to me. I know, I could get my own camera, but I’m afraid it would find its way to the back room and disappear 😉

That’s the problem when someone becomes an “enthusiast.” You get curious about gear. Then obsessive. 😉
