WHAT THE HELL

Kevin Brennan Writes About What It's Like

Why does it always feel like the bad guys are winning?

Item: Buckaroo border agents on horseback wrangled Haitian immigrants on the banks of the Rio Grande like they were lil dogies being led to auction. When we start thinking of other human beings as stockyard denizens, we’re up to our eyeballs in malevolence.

Item: Guv. Greg Abbott’s approval rating is dropping precipitously in Texas. Presumably this is because more than half of the state’s residents have awakened to the fact that he’s dragging them back to the Middle Ages, before Roe v. Wade, before modern medicine, before literacy for all, and maybe even before the end of feudalism. This guy is full-retrograde. On the other hand, polls show that if the election were held today, he’d be defeated by Matthew McConaughey by nine points. Is that really progress?

Item: Anti-democracy forces aren’t just at work from the GQP side of things. J’accuse to the congressional “moderates” (or “centrists” if you prefer) who are threatening to blow up Biden’s infrastructure agenda by pretending to believe that bipartisanship is still possible. Failure to apprehend reality is antidemocratic. Joe Manchin, Kyrsten Sinema, and others (they’re starting to come out of the woodwork now) apparently cannot bring themselves to see that the old rules don’t apply anymore. There will never be Republican support for anything Joe Biden proposes. Holding out for it means walking right into the GQP trap, and they’ll get to run next year on the “do-nothing” Democratic Congress. How come I can see this but the progeny of the old Blue Dogs can’t?

Item: And by the way, Sinema took over $750K from the pharmaceutical industry then promptly said she would not support prescription drug pricing reform. Bought n’ paid for. Same with Mr. Manchin, a stooge for big energy. All of it’s in plain sight too.

Item: It’s too early to know how bad the economic fallout will be, but nihilist senator, Mitch McConnell, is hellbent on shutting down the government and defaulting on U.S. debt payments in the name of “owning the libs.” It’s the annual debt ceiling crisis—the pumpkin spice latte of GQP antics. We all know that McConnell hopes to pin the turmoil on Dems next year, which will grease the skids for a Republican takeover of Congress. In the past, this has never worked. It’s backfired. But as I keep saying, it’s a new world now.

Item: Looks like the Supreme Court’s intransigence has caused its approval ratings to plummet. They’re now below 50%, down more than 11 points since July. Democrats give them a 37. Why is this happening? Maybe it’s because they do things like erode voting rights and deprive women in Texas of personal control over their own bodies, while simultaneously claiming to be above partisan politics. It’s like Barret, Kavanaugh, Alito, et al. think we’re fuckin’ stupid or something.

And I guarantee you that if the Repugs are in control, they will do heinous things as a cohesive group and never think twice about it.

Absolutely. Unlike Dems, they use the power they have. Makes me think twice about killing the filibuster …

So how do the Haitians get to the southern border?

Matthew McConaughey. That his name is even mentioned tells you what kind of of shape Texas is in.

It all started with Jesse Ventura. We should have seen this coming!

Did you see the news stories about Texans emigrating from Texas because their state is in such awful shape, with high taxes and bad government policies? And massive wildfires?

I didn’t figure you for someone who could dish it out but couldn’t take it. Still don’t figure you that way.

No, but I’ve thought about doing that, too.

You definitely would like it better in California or New York. I guarantee it.
