WHAT THE HELL

Kevin Brennan Writes About What It's Like

Song of Bernadette

KevinBrennan · Bernadette Peters

Imagine if Paul McCartney had kept the original words to his classic, “Yesterday.” The song would be known and loved to this day as “Scrambled Eggs.”

Well, that’s the story of this little number. I was playing around with a riff and wondering what lyrics I could possibly put to it, and the perfect rhythmic companion to the riff turned out to be “Bernadette Peters.” I never thought of something better, so I forged ahead with an ode to this national treasure.

This is the first tune I’ve played an actual bass on too. Before now, I always had to use a MIDI keyboard to simulate the sound of a bass. Which, don’t get me wrong, it’s great to have that kind of tool, but there’s something more three-dimensional about the real deal. I’m going to try to improve my chops on the instrument in ’22 (my New Year’s resolution).

Remember: I’m no singer, but the song has words so I sung ‘em!
